Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

Kirkland, WA ACT tutoring
The girls went over their answers to a reading section they finished for homework from their previous session, and then we worked on more reading passages, doing one passage at a time and then discussing the answers and how to improve their accuracy. I also timed them in each section to make sure they were able to finish the passages within the time frame.

As the student's confidence on math has already improved so much, we went through a full math section, including the most difficult questions, to let her challenge herself. She did well, although she asked for help on a few of them. She also breezed through a practice English test and most of a science test. I'm thinking of reviewing geometry with her next lesson, as she seems least confident in that area.

Today, the student and I reviewed a science passage from the reading section that he had previously completed. While completing the section under 10 minutes, he correctly answered 9 out of 10 questions. During our session, we completed a social science passage and humanities passage. Overall, the student seems to perform better on the science and social sciences passages compared to the prose fiction and humanities passages. This confirmed our test strategy in which the student will finish those passages first during his test, and then move on to the other passages to help build confidence and ensure more correct answers. We also talked about punctuation rules in regards to the English section; we covered commas, apostrophes, colons, and semicolons.

During today's session we reviewed the English and math sections of the exam. First, the student completed several English passages and we reviewed them together. She only missed one or two questions out of fifteen on each passage. This was a significant improvement over the exams she completed on Saturday and Sunday. During the second half of the session, we focused on mastering the last ten questions on the math section since those are usually the most difficult. We discussed the questions that the student missed and if she was unsure of how to solve a problem, I showed her how to find the answer.

We went over the questions that the student missed in the ACT diagnostic tests for English grammar, reading, math, and science. She is a strong math and science student, and the section we needed more practice with was critical reading. For the reading section, I explained the correct answers to her, and we used the process of elimination, reasoning, and specific evidence from the passages to understand why the other choices were incorrect. For the grammar and math sections, we learned new concepts as we went over the solutions. We began working on the science section and will finish reviewing it next time.
