Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I reviewed for his final next week. We had a copy of last semester's final that we were able to work through as a review. We reviewed derivatives, integrals, and graphing. We are meeting again tomorrow to continue reviewing for the final."
"Today we covered topics that were central to the student's upcoming quiz. We went over the chain rule, derivatives of trigonometric functions, and derivatives of logarithmic functions. The student has trouble setting up problems that involved using the chain rule to take derivatives, but slowly improved as we did more and more problems in the book. I gave him some practice problems to work on in his book before I left so he can get practice the material for him to retain the material for our session. Overall, the student had a positive attitude toward the material that was reviewed."
"Today we covered using derivative equations to find extrema, reviewed the mean value theorem, and started work on related rates. The student is doing extraordinarily well: he picks up new material remarkably quickly. Unfortunately, his teacher does not provide very insightful feedback, so my role here will be one that largely depends on positive reinforcement and explanation where his instructor falls short. He is drawn to visual examples and practical application of the subject matter, and shows a genuine enthusiasm for the topics when their pragmatic value is demonstrated."
"Today we did a final preparation for the student's final test. We reviewed all the practice required by the instructor, and I challenged the student with what procedure applies where. At this point, I expect a very good outcome on the test."
"Today we finished our last session before the student's exam, covering a broad range of topics from the last couple chapters, including optimization, L'Hopital's rule, mean value theorem, and a little bit of trig review. He told me he's feeling much better about the exam than he was two days ago, and I'm confident that he knows the material and will do well on the exam."
"Today we focused largely on L'Hopital's rule and finding minimums and maximums. The biggest win from today was the student's working with the unit circle to work through a particularly difficult minimum/ maximum problem."
