This session, the student and I worked through difficulties she was having with her homework assignment. Her class is working on geometry. Specifically, perimeters and areas of composite figures. Initially, she was mixing up methods for finding perimeter and area. After we addressed these challenges, she demonstrated a good grasp of the concepts. Overall, it was a very productive session.

Moving forward, we decided that the goal of future sessions would be to focus on math vocabulary and problem solving strategies so that he is best prepared for the Math assessment test.

Today we worked with the subtraction facts for 16, 17, and 18. The student is catching on quickly and is able to complete the problems accurately and rapidly. Today I worked with him using domino math to reinforce the facts. His mom also shared that he did well and was able to complete his subtraction paper at school, which is a marked improvement. He is doing a great job!

The student worked on her homework which was again on fractions. The first part asked her to break up different polygons into fractions. This got tricky when it asked her to break a hexagon into 1/2, 1/3, and 1/6 with labels. The concept of showing different fractions on one picture is difficult to learn. The homework went on to compare fractions. I began teaching some of what a common denominator is, but only where it was simple. So that 3/6 = 1/2 because 1x3=3 and 2x3=6.
