Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Kent, WA Calculus tutoring
This was the student's first session and we spent some time talking about what topics she struggles with and what her strengths are. She said she has difficulty with parallel lines and angles and today we started going over the angles formed when 2 parallel lines are cut by a transversal. She was very good with the math vocabulary and knew what transversal, congruent, and parallel lines were. Her mental math was exceptional and she was able to do simple algebra equations in her head and did them all correctly. I taught her how to properly identify the different angles by using the vocabulary. She felt very confident with the topic after a bit of practice we did using the online worksheet. By the end of the session she understood how to identify what are corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles and same side interior angles and what supplementary means. A very productive session and she showed no signs of struggle when we were reviewing the topic.

Yesterday the student and I covered division using the standard method. The more he practices, the better he will become at remembering each step with ease. I watched him become more and more confident as we solved each division problem. I enjoyed watching him solve the division problems because with each problem he became more confident in himself.

The student and I went over 2 problems from his physics textbook that he had questions about before his test this evening. Then we solved a list of practice derivatives from his teacher that combined all the different derivative rules for different kinds of functions in preparation for an important test. Although he has understood what he needs to do for each problem since he first learned these topics, he is making steady progress with his consistency in being able to solve problems without small mistakes.
