Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is really doing well. She was pretty confident with her homework on congruency theorems, just had a little trouble with the concept of the intercept of a triangle and angle bisecting theories. With more practice she should get better though."
"The student and I worked on Spanish preterite and imperfect, English sentence patterns and grammar, and went over some old Chemistry tests."
"We began here where we left off last week, by discussing the student's research on adverbs over the past week. We then finished our main parts of speech examination by discussing and identifying prepositions, prepositional phrases, and prepositional objects. The student sometimes struggles with distinguishing prepositions from verbs, in part because they both are followed by object nouns, so I've asked him to read up on prepositions before next week's session. We also looked at identifying the subjects and predicates of statements, questions, commands, and exclamations; the student quickly mastered this skill."
"Today the student and I reviewed the verbs estar, tener, querer, and poder. We brainstormed and discussed many uses of the verb poder that could be useful in the grocery store. After this, we talked about the verb necesitar. We also practiced with mock conversations between employees and with clients."
"We worked today on simplifying radicals. We looked at simplifying radicals, square roots, cube roots, etc. Also reviewed simplifying expressions with radicals in the denominator and multiplying expressions with radicals."
"The student and I took a math test this time, and we went over all but the last page. We discussed word problem translation, complex percent problems, and the fundamental counting principle, among other topics. I assigned the next math section and a worksheet on word problem translation for HW."
"Today was spent focusing on material that will be covered in the last test before the final. This material dealt with the cell cycle, mitosis, and cancer. The first portion of the session was used to review the homework assignment relating to this chapter. After that, we had a conceptually focused discussion about cancer, illustrated with histology slides showing key characteristics of all cancers. The session finished with an examination of the stages of mitosis, during which I shared mnemonic techniques."
"The student and I went over the revised version of her essay, which constituted a significant improvement over the previous draft. We discussed which issues remained and how to fix those issues. We also compared drafts to look at the differences and identify changes where they had been made. After that we went over certain English grammar exercises, specifically those that involved sentence corrections. We completed 2 sections of these exercises, and went over the correct answers. We also discussed time management strategies for the reading and writing sections of the test."

"Physics: Went over questions involving FBDs. Looked at how friction is related to forces acting on a projectile or object. Compared questions discussing coefficients of kinetic friction as well as static friction."
"Tonight, the student and I worked on the reading and writing section of practice test number 5. Her first composite score was 22, her last composite score was 27. She is showing wonderful progress and should reach her goal of a 30 with a little more practice and strategies."
"The student first completed her writing assignment. She wrote about her favorite show, and if she could be one character on the show, who would she be and why. The rest of the hour we continued to review lesson 18 in her vocabulary book. She is to complete another writing assignment and the lesson 18 extra practice I created for her as homework."
