Tutoring review by Kevin in Kenmore, NY
Today we reviewed complex numbers and the quadratic equation briefly and then continued to discuss Linear Inequalities in one variable. We discussed unions and domains and applied the concepts to solve several of the student's homework problems. She was energetic and optimistic towards learning the material, which is the best kind of student to have. I will be sending her some practice questions in review for her upcoming exam. The student must keep a close eye on notation, in order for it to be beneficial.

We reviewed the section of problems that will be on the student's test that we hadn't reviewed yet. The problems all involved linear programming. He already understood the basic concept of how to do them, and we walked through 4 examples including 2 word problems and 2 sets of linear equations. He showed me that he understood each step and was able to get the right answer. He seemed very confident in his work.

This week, we went over the writing section. I feel confident that the student is fairly proficient in this area, but we went over the new prompt that she will be working with this fall. This style of prompt has several specific challenges that need a different kind of strategy to address, so we talked about what this would look like. We also reviewed several of the sample essays on the ACT website, and analyzed their strengths and weaknesses. To finish the session, we did some science practice problems and worked on implementing the strategies we had talked about last session.

The student was working with introductory trig functions, and did not feel very confident. It became clear that, although she could progress through the algorithm, she had no context for what the trig functions meant or why we cared. Explaining this helped her. We discussed how having information helps us solve the problem, but that she doesn't need to identify more than necessary (i.e.: identify the two legs of the triangle relevant to the problem and forget about the third). Finally, we made use of formula structure to solve for different parts of the trig equation. She was feeling better about the process by the end of the session, and I plan on reviewing the concept again next week.

Today we went over the student's second PreCalc test. She did fairly well, especially the areas we went over extensively. After going over the test we went over complex numbers and algebra. She seemed to struggle with the idea of imaginary numbers which is normal. Hopefully with more exposure and practice she will understand.
