The student is planning to apply to psychology doctoral programs next fall and is working on her statement of purpose. She asked me to help her get started, so I discussed with her some general guidelines for writing the statement, as well as specific issues to which she should attend in her essay. We outlined the basic ideas she would cover in her essay and reviewed a sample statement. After that, we did a lesson on word roots.

1) Today, we worked from 2 essay drafts. First we talked about the editing stages, and how he will write multiple drafts for each college essay. We looked first at word choice. I circled dozens of words in each essay, and asked him to find more vivid/descriptive words to provide more for the reader. 2) Commas. We reviewed some basic comma rules and then completed 2 worksheets dealing with commas used in clauses and phrases. After a few dozen examples, we turned to his essays. I had him correct 4 or 5 sentences in each essay. He was beginning to recognize non-restrictive clauses and modifiers. We will continue comma work next session as well. 3) Parallel structure: We completed a worksheet, and found 2 examples in his essay. He will finish correcting for homework. 4) Homework: Rewrite each of the essays correcting commas, parallel structure, and word choice selections. If he has time, write 3rd essay with topic: What makes a person successful?

We moved on to her third progression which deals with the Great Gatsby. Today was great for this reason, when I arrived she already had the base symbols she wanted to write about typed out and was already looking through her book for supporting quotes. Without much help from me, she nearly completed one of the early assignments for the third progression! We discussed, again, the importance of getting her smaller assignments and reading done so that we can tackle and complete the larger essays together.

Through my own experience with the student , as well as discussions with his parents, it was determined that he needs much more instruction and review with the fundamentals of reading and grammar. This past Wednesday, he had some difficulty distinguishing between plurals and possessives, so I introduced the basic rules of possessives today. Knowing that he enjoys video games, I researched done educational interactive a that he might enjoy. He performed well with these, and even requested a few extra rounds! We also reviewed the basic function of adverbs. Since his vocabulary repertoire is if concern, I gave him lists of basic vocabulary expected by his grade level. I asked him to highlight any words with which he is unfamiliar. My plan is to choose 10 words per week to introduce to hin, and to use well- researched techniques to help him interact with the words and retain their meaning in the long term.

The session started with the student and I reviewing her math homework. Next, she was required to complete a vocabulary activity where she was given words in a box, and she had to match them to the correct sentence. We discussed the various meanings of the words in her book, and we practiced making sentences with each word for each meaning. I then introduced her to possessive nouns and possessive pronouns. Once I provided examples for her, she was able to verbalize sentences and independently identify the possessive nouns and possessive pronouns. I left a homework sheet for the week requiring her to read one chapter in her book and write a summary, complete a vocabulary activity, math worksheets, and a writing activity.
