How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is a private school admissions tests that challenges most students. Varsity Tutors can match you with an enthusiastic SSAT tutor in Kendall, FL, who will encourage your child to aim higher.

The SSAT is a national private school admission test used by many private middle schools and high schools. The test comes in three versions for different grade levels. There are upper level (grades 8 and above), middle level (grades 5-7), and elementary level (grades 3 and 4) tests, covering much of the same material. The multiple-choice questions on quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and verbal reasoning become more challenging on the middle and upper level tests. The upper and middle level tests are much longer than the elementary level test, and all versions of the test are timed. The required essay is not scored, but does go out to schools that evaluate your student's writing ability. All tests cover reading comprehension, writing ability, grammar, basic math, advanced math skills like algebra and probability, problem solving ability, and quantitative reasoning.

This session we focused on time and pacing. The student has a good grasp of the concepts that will be on the test, so I wanted to make sure he's also working at a fast enough pace. We'll continue to practice strategies to work quickly and navigate difficult questions, but the student is already doing a good job. Almost all of his answers were right, his pacing was good and he didn't have problems with missing details because he was rushing.

Today in math we looked at decimals. We put decimals in order and did some practice questions in the student's book on relating decimals to fractions. In reading we worked a lot on vocabulary cards from my SSAT wordlist. She still needs to practice words she does not know. We also looked at finding the main idea in nonfiction pieces. After the session, I spoke with the student's mom about setting goals based on what their target school desires and encouraging the student to do her best.

Kendall, FL SSAT tutoring
We continued working with fractions. We started with the very basic concepts like how to identify what operations are required in the word problems. We practiced the concepts using basic fraction problems at first, then proceeded with more complicated questions. I showed him how the basic concepts from the previous questions apply to the more advanced ones. These questions took more effort and he was able to handle the introductory work, but would constantly make the same mistake when attempting such problems. I used a little tip concerning proportions and order to help him get past the hurdle. After reviewing the tip and practicing it he had an easier time handling such questions.
