Kendall, FL Latin tutoring
Today the student and I continued through Stage 24 of the Cambridge Series. The stories gave us the opportunity to review vocabulary, translating strategies ("find your verb"), and new grammar. The major new grammar for today was the formal introduction of the subjunctive mood. We covered two tenses and one construction in the subjunctive: imperfect, pluperfect, and the cum clause. He did great, and he will e-mail me to set up the next session.

Today, the student and I did some preliminary studying for his test on Thursday. For the first hour, we studied present and perfect participles and went over several study exercises. For the last half an hour, we went over personal and demonstrative pronouns. He was sharp and focused, and did a terrific job today.

Today we went over the beginnings of the passive voice. We covered in detail the present, imperfect, future, perfect, pluperfect and future perfect forms. We spent more time working on converting active voice "present system" verbs to their passive voice counterparts. I will spend more time next session going over the "perfect system" verbs. In the second part of the session we started the second chapter of Book I of Caesar's "The Gallic Wars." We spent this time going over difficult grammatical constructions and how to fit different bits of grammar together in a sentence.

This session we went through the first few pages of the student's summer Latin packet, and reviewed all grammar concepts that the packet touched on. Specifically, we focused on verb conjugations, verb stems, how to conjugate a verb, and the present and imperfect tense. Since the school year just started, I did not see any scores. He had some challenges remembering all the grammatical concepts he learned last year. However, he seemed to quickly remember them as we reviewed his packet.

In our second session, the student and I continued reviewing some topics he felt some uncertainty about. This came out of his classwork for chapters 41 and 42 from the book. We spent most of the session working with verbs: principal parts, various tenses and uses. I noticed a similar pattern like last week- the student understands the broad concepts and can translate a sentence of Latin reasonably well, but needs work grasping the 'how' and 'why' of various grammatical concepts. He seems to pick these up very easily, which is great. We decided this will be our primary focus for the coming weeks, while also working on translation skills and any weekly homework/lessons as needed.
