Session Summaries by French Tutors

In this session the student and I went over numbers again, and the time. It is a bit hard for him to make sentences constructions, so we are working on it. Also, we started to learn about the weather and how to express what the weather is like in every season. His homework is to study this.

Student and I met for the first time today, and I was impressed with his memory skills. Learning the vocabulary doesn't seem to be a problem for him. I helped him to do his Spanish homework, reminding him to use "se" in reflexive verbs, and then we created flashcards for his new vocab words. I quizzed him on them until he knew every one. Then we spent about fifteen minutes speaking Spanish to each other. Overall I understand him and with practice I'm sure his speaking will improve. He definitely understands more than he can speak, which is a good sign. I told him to ask "como se dice" whenever there's a word he wants to use but doesn't know. Lastly, I advised him to purchase an accordion notebook to store his homework. That way, he can keep all his homework safe and dry in its own space, but still organize it into his different classes.

We went through five pages in the student's workbook for class. It might be helpful for him to do his homework with a Spanish-English dictionary with him and possibly with a 501 Spanish verbs book to help him easily look up conjugations. I left him with a few songs to listen to and follow along with the lyrics to help his pronunciation.

The student scored poorly on his last unit test, re-take, and quiz. We have been working to cover material he missed in Spanish last year. When I reviewed his tests, I noticed several simple mistakes were made because he did not understand the directions. Although he still needs to catch up, I believe the best direction to go with the tutoring is to concentrate on the current unit of study and spend a small amount of time working through the missed units. I wrote out some additional practice which I have asked the student to complete during his 20 minutes of daily practice.

We continued to review conjugations of -ar verbs, estar, and ser. The student continued to struggle with remembering the different conjugations and applying them in sentences. After working on a conjugation mnemonic, he made good progress during the session. I gave him flash-cards to work with until Thursday.

The student and I went over many different French 2 concepts today. We started the session with a short 5 question quiz assessing her level. The questions addressed: vocabulary, possessive adjectives, object pronouns and partitive pronouns, the past tense, imperfect tense, and the conditional tense. We also spoke about the subjunctive tense briefly. She has learned the passe compose, the recent past, the present tense, possessive adjectives, object pronouns, pronouns, and how to conjugate regular verbs. She has also been a little exposed to the conditional tense as well as the subjunctive tense. She will need some review on conjugating verbs. She will also need to review the passe compose with the auxiliary verbs etre and avoir. I asked her to memorize the "maison d'etre" for all verbs conjugated with etre in the past tense as well as learn the correct present tense conjugation for avoir and give some examples of verbs that are conjugated with avoir in the past tense. She is doing a great job, she has a terrific accent and responds very well to direction! I look forward to continuing to work with this student.
