The student and I did review of the imperfect and preterite tenses.  She needed some recap of topics we have already covered; I think a lack of confidence is getting somewhat in her way. Because she didn't have homework, I had her work on composing a summary of a movie she had recently seen, focusing on choosing the proper tense and have a variety of vocabulary.

This was my first meeting with the student in preparation for her exam on Feb. 9th. I went over the results from her practice exam and talked with her about goals for improvement. She is already scoring pretty well (a composite 31 on her practice exam and did particularly well on the reading comprehension section). We are prioritizing working on the science and English language sections, as well as improving speed. Today we went over her missed answers from the practice exam and then practiced another science section, emphasizing the data interpretation questions. Our next goals are reviewing the usage and mechanics material for the English section and improving speed.

This was our last session before his big test. We worked through some of the very complex problems from the 6th grade text he has. We focused primarily on how to set up his thinking using either algebra or bar modeling to solve vs guess and check. And when each strategy is most appropriate. Continued to focus on writing work and using units. Content focused quite a bit on ratios, fractions and percents in problem solving.

We discussed the requirements of the student's Internal Assessment. We shared ideas about her research topic and question and how to frame it in a more effective way. I advised on the best sources of information for this commentary, and she shared the ones she already had. I explained the methodology behind the IA, the type of Business tools she might use to analyze her research problem, and the concepts to cover, including the Six Concepts of the syllabus (CUEGIS). The student had a positive attitude. I left her with some reading materials like the IA criteria and samples of IA commentaries and moderator comments to be discussed in our next session.
