Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was my second session with the student in prepping him for the SSAT. We started the session with a review of yesterday's focus on the verbal section, particularly the problem areas of word parts (prefix, suffix, and root words) and synonyms in determining the meaning and context of familiar and unfamiliar words. I uploaded two documents for him to use, from which he can make flashcards of common prefixes, suffixes and root words. We then progressed to the SSAT math diagnostic, (40 question test), on which he scored a 67%. He felt that the test was really hard, but I mentioned that although there is room for him to improve, there were areas of the test that he scored well on, such as the numbers and operations section (80%). However, the diagnostic revealed that the majority of questions missed (13/40) were dispersed across the algebra, geometry and ration and proportion concepts. We began going over the problems he missed, discussing study and test strategies and associated formulas. His confidence seemed to increase as we reviewed the missed questions. We reviewed 7 of the 13 problems and will pick up with the remaining problems next week, after solidifying the tutoring appointment for next Monday."
"We covered a practice placement exam out of the practice book. He had taken the test, and we corrected it and went over wrong answers, strategies, and we scaled his score and looked at it on a percentage basis. He scored very highly, ranking about 80%, 95% & 96% on the three sections. He is to continue to work on his vocabulary."
"As this was my first session with the student, I specifically covered the diagnostic test that she had taken. I noted that verbal and math are her weaknesses, while she is strong in critical reading. I left her with practice accordingly and do not have any concerns from this session."
