Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we continued working on the nomenclature of organic compounds. I brought some practice problems, and the student solved most of them. He will continue reviewing for his test on Tuesday."
"We went over the pH and pOH scales, concentrations of ions, calculations for pH values, and general concepts for acids and bases."
"The student and I did a review for final: gas laws, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, reaction rates, etc. I also answered questions from the review."
"During this session, we reviewed different types of chemical bonds: the difference between ionic and covalent bonds as well as ionic bonds with polyatomic ions. She understood this well, except she struggled some with the concept of polyatomic ions. She understood it better by the end of our session. We then worked on balancing chemical equations, stoichiometry, percent yield, and empirical formulas. She did very well with this material and made improvements during the session."
"Electron configurations, orbital configurations, Hund's rule, Aufbau principle, octet rule, and valence electrons were the main topics of today. Then, we moved onto ionic bonding. For homework, the student will complete the two tutorials on her home computer. We were only able to get in one session this week. Next week, we are aiming for 3 sessions."
"Electronic shell configuration, core and valence electrons, s p and d orbital shapes, the poly-exclusion principle (when there are equivalent energy orbitals, add an electron to each before starting to pair the electrons up), Lewis dot structures, checking if each atom has an octet vs checking for the formal charge, nonpolar covalent, polar covalent and ionic bonding, a bit about metallic bonding, all the information one can get from a mole, how to covert to number of things, moles and grams, and using a couple of methods."
