Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I completed lesson 6 section 1 in his biology book, regarding elements and atoms. He managed to do very well."
"Specifically we covered biotechnology, DNA replication, evolution, genetics, and molecular genetics. The student was not provided with a textbook for this course, rather just an assignment booklet. I managed to use my MCAT biology review book as a means to a reference. She was able to identify the material, yet lacked the ability to express deep understanding on the material prior to my input on the topic. The student needed help the most with comprehending short anecdotes which were required to read prior to answering certain questions. I went over studying tools to best digest the short anecdote, which included underlining important information, writing shorthand notes on the side of the paragraph which capture the main concept, and revisiting the short anecdote when unsure of how to answer the question. The student primarily went over the homework assignment she needed to complete for Wednesday's class. She showed improvement from question to question. The application type questions were the most difficult for her, however she showed progress as she encountered more questions similar to these. She expressed the desire the learn, improve, and to thoroughly complete her work."
"We reviewed further for the student's upcoming final. She did very well today and should be ready for her final."
"Today we covered photosynthesis, the citrus cycles, the electron transport and ATP synthase. Since the student did not have a large background in chemistry I helped with some of the concepts of electrons. I also helped predict what the teacher would likely quiz on and potential traps that students make. She came to the meeting with questions and was excited to work. I would give her leading questions and quiz her about topics that were talked about earlier. She has been working on the study guide for this exam. Since this is the second time I have met her she hasn't had any quizzes. I think the biggest win is that she seems more comfortable with the material and excited to learn."
"Today we discussed The Working Cell (Ch.5), which detailed everything from the fluid mosaic (plasma membrane concept) to diffusion, active transport, thermodynamics, enzymes, and inhibitors. We worked ahead of the student's class lecture to give her a foundational understanding before her professor lectures on this chapter. She expressed feeling good about her understanding of the content she learned today."
"Today we reviewed the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, then I quizzed the student on all the organelles in plant and animal cells, and she did very well. I tested her on the names, functions, and key characteristics of each organelle. We went over it until she was more confident about her answers and feeling better about her quiz tomorrow. I told her to take some extra time to study tonight and tomorrow before the quiz to make she remembers all the functions. Lastly, I want her to know that she is going to do great! She knows all the material, and she needs to go with her instincts and try not to overthink her answers. If she needs another session before the test please let me know. I am more available on the weekend, and will fit her in right away since she has her test coming up early next week."
