Today was our first session. We went over the material that the student and I will be covering while we study. We started with the basic building blocks of writing and vocabulary development. We discussed investing in the Oxford Concise dictionary, and then we proceeded to go over basic parts of speech. The student is an avid reader, and we are going to incorporate reading assignments into our lessons. I have him a small homework assignment that covers parts of speech and basic usage.

On Tuesday, the student and I began to construct the second section of his final paper, detailing how his grandfather's work ethic has translated to his own life and experiences. We also discussed further research techniques for supporting his ideas and arguments with secondary sources. We brainstormed some more about the overall shape and structure of his paper and used that discussion to plan out our next few meetings and what we hope to accomplish during each one. Lastly, we discussed a few tasks that the student would have to complete for homework. The student continues to be a diligent and dedicated student.

The student had completed her first essay of her final project before our meeting, and we spent the first 45 minutes going over her essay and cutting down extraneous portions. She had written about eight pages, which need to be reduced to about five pages. We concentrated on her second essay, a reflection paper on her case study. We began formatting an outline for that. She had also written a one page response to one of the questions, and we spent some time reviewing what she had written. By next week, she is going to write the entirety of this essay, which we will then review and edit.
