Session Summaries by ASPIRE Tutors

Kansas City, MO ASPIRE tutoring
We started this session today by going over the three critical reading sections that the girls did from our session on Saturday. They all scored over 600, which means they all have great starting scores in both math and critical reading. All three of them have very strong vocabularies and I can see that in the fact that they barely get any sentence completion questions wrong. They had a little more trouble with the passages, particularly a long narrative that we went over. We will focus more on passages than vocabulary. We also took a look at the chapters for the writing section and we managed to get through the essay and two of he multiple choice types. For the essay, we read some examples of perfect essays and went through why they scored so well. We then did a bit of practice in the multiple choice questions. We will be meeting again tomorrow and we will finish the material, which means we can really start pushing for a lot of practice and see some increasing scores.

Split the time between doing problems on reading and math practice tests. In math we solved problems by plugging in the x,y values of points we know are on a line and we substituted with 1 and 0 when they are possible values of x. In reading we reviewed vocabulary terms, talked about target or clue words to use as placeholders in fill-in-the-blank problems, and came up with decision rules to choose quickly between remaining answers.

Today, the student and I worked mostly on essay writing. We started off by talking about the essay he had written for homework, after a vocabulary test and a review of his practice problems. We practiced brainstorming and writing theses and coming up with examples for the essay. Then, we spent some time reviewing strategies and worked on passage-based reading.

The student and I worked on the SAT math, writing, and critical reading sections. She seems to understand most of the math. She is good at using the context of sentences as a tool for understanding which words best fit. Next session we will work on similar material, and focus more on the essay portion.

This was the student's first session. She has pretty even scores across the board but reading was her weakest. At her request we went over the reading comprehension. She is an excellent student and does a really good job justifying her answers when I ask. I think that she should not have a hard time improving her abilities to perform on the test. I got her started on a page of definitions of words that she doesn't know. The first passage we worked on was pretty easy, so the focus was on how to answer questions and how to justify the best answer in a MC situation.

This week we went through general strategies of the ACT after getting to know one another. She is strongest in the English portion, so that is the least of our focus. Instead, we are focusing much more on Math and Science. To delve further, we went through much of the Math section, with emphasis on problems that she got incorrect. I intend to go through more math next time and perhaps some reading to offset it. Before leaving, I suggested that she look at the best practices and read the overviews of the sections for familiarity.
