How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

You may have the best private high school in mind for your child. Chances are, admission isn't possible unless they ace the High School Placement Test. This nearly 300-question, 2.5-hour exam is notoriously challenging. It has no standardized scoring, as many nationally administered tests do. Your child's language, math, quantitative, reading, and verbal skills may be tested, as well as their endurance. Being familiar with the content is as important as being comfortable with the test format. Test preparation includes doing practice exercises and shoring up any weaknesses. A tutor may effectively assist your child with this preparation. Varsity Tutors' educational directors may connect your student with an independent HSPT tutor in Kansas City, MO, after considering all of their specific goals and needs. First, the tutor may identify any areas of confusion, then they'll create a personalized study plan that targets these subjects as needed.

Unlike a classroom test prep program, your child's tutor has time to focus on them only. They may explain the study materials and identify useful tools. It's also possible to track your student's progress along the way to be sure they are learning, the lessons may be adapted to fit their pace and learning style. Alternative teaching methods may be applied where necessary. With this help, your student may potentially score near an 800, as their tutor has likely done.

The student is killing it in math. He needs to work on vocabulary. This is very important for the SAT. He needs to do more sections when I'm not there. This will make our sessions more productive. His math has improved greatly and he can improve on the other sections with some work outside of our sessions.

Final session. I reviewed practice test 1 from my resources with both students. We had a final review of strategies for problem-solving and test-taking. Both students were nearly perfect in their answers on all sections of the test; they have obviously applied themselves during our time together, and are ready for the exams.

We also went over specific strategies for the poetry passages. We spent most of the session Quantitative Reasoning section with particular focus on numeric sequences and numeric logic problems.

The student and I resumed our lessons with some analogy and logic question review. She is applying her strategy appropriately, and it has helped her accuracy immensely. We read a few passages together, just to keep those skills sharp, and then returned to some math review. We covered some word problem challenges, such as distance and averages.
