The student needs to write the book review/composition for his English class. Today we discussed a poetry analysis essay for the student's English class. She had a lot of great ideas to start with, and then we delved more into the analysis and spent a lot of time looking at the poem and brainstorming specific concepts for her to talk about. Her analysis was very astute, and I think she's covered a lot of very high-level concepts that will give her a great deal to write about. We spent the latter part of her session organizing her thoughts into a strong outline for her essay. She's going to meet with her teacher on Friday to get his thoughts/input-- but I think she's very ready to write and should have no problem completing the assignment.

We then moved on to studying for an upcoming vocabulary test, which he did very well on.

The student told me that she got very good marks on the essay we worked on together, and that her team won their debate (we had also worked on her arguments together). I proposed a list of goals for her summer sessions, which she was on board with. They include increased flexibility in sentence structure, avoiding run-on and incomplete sentences, expansion of vocabulary, reading comprehension, and poetry composition. Today we read through an excerpt from Terry Pratchett's book, "Dodger." We dissected the sentences and analyzed their structure. Then we played the "improv writing" game where the student picks from a list of people, places, and problems and has to use her choices to construct a sentence. This time, I challenged her to rearrange her sentence using some of the structure examples from our earlier reading. She did a great job. I assigned her a short writing assignment for next week - a description.
