Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"She had just taken a test before this session. So, we reviewed the test and helped her correct the mistakes she had made. Several of her mistakes were just simple math errors. She would set up the problem correctly, and then make an error in computing. We just reviewed these problems and had her find her math errors. However, she still has trouble figuring out how to set up word problems. She will often get part of the problems set up correctly, but then she would not recognize how to complete the problem. We worked for the bulk of the time on word problems. She can solve one and two step word problems which require addition or subtraction easily. However, when the problem requires multiplication or division, she becomes confused. She often wants to divide when she should multiply and vice versa. This is an area on which we will continue to work in the next session. I will download a set of word problems which incorporate multiplication/division and her new skill of graphing."
"She had some homework that needed to be completed in order for her to bring her grade up some. We worked on two of the problems that she needed to work on, and have 2 left. She is struggling with the positive and negative integers rules, so we will be trying to use the number line to help her. I also have a rhyme we will go over, which I am sure she will think is silly, but may help her remember the rules. Tomorrow is our regular session."
"She had some questions on graphing trigonometric functions, so we reviewed notes before completing her homework assignment. She also had a question on vectors in physics which we addressed afterwards. She had a general idea of what to do with both topics, but I just had to help with sorting out details and setting up a good plan of attack."
"She had the most trouble with derivatives and integrals of natural logs. We did several problems together until she got the hang of it. We also covered implicit differentiation, finding a tangent line, local extrema, etc.."
"She has a test coming up on Thursday, so the problems she had to work on were still a review of algebra concepts that she's already done. We worked through the problems together, and she only needed more help on two of them, which is great! We ended with a quick review of exponent rules and how they can be used more trickily in problems."
"She has a test on Thursday, so we spent today going through her old quizzes and tried to highlight where she is having difficulties. We spent a lot of time on factoring polynomial expressions. She doesn't seem to have a hard time with basic expressions, but with the more complicated ones, she finds it more difficult to plug and chug different numbers. We also spent a bit of time on simplifying radical equations. I don't expect her to know everything for her test Thursday, as she was still making mistakes and there simply wasn't enough time to cover everything. She also has a project due Monday that we will be working on during Thursday's session."
