"She and I worked on her homework math assignment, which focused on adding and subtracting negative numbers. I showed her how she can find the answer looking by placing the starting number on a number line and creating hops (which signify the number being subtracted or added) to find the correct answer. By visualizing the number line, she was able to find the answers to her problems. I also showed her the rule of subtracting a negative number, which makes that second number a positive. She now has a strategy to handle the addition and subtraction of negative numbers. We completed the assignment, and then I created additional problems for her to solve. She was able to gain more confidence in solving these problems."
"She and I worked on her math homework together and discovered that several problems we had already completed in the book were assigned for homework! In class, they are learning the Pythagorean Theorem, which we have already been working on for several sessions. She said that the class they felt really easy and she felt like she was moving much more quickly than her classmates. Next, we did some more challenging Pythagorean problems that were not part of her homework set. For homework, I assigned her some difficult problems."
"She and I worked on linear equations and how they are related to matrices. We worked on multiple application problems in order to get her familiar with how to set up the equations necessary to solve the problem. We also visited some of her previous work involving consistent and inconsistent systems to make sure she knew how to do it. I recommend she do problems out of the book or from her homework and rework them for practice in order to minimize the simple mistakes."
"She and I worked on some homework problems from the finance section of her class. We were able to work out the problems after finding the correct equations and applying them. The questions were predominantly focused on average monthly balance and interest payments. We also went over another homework assignment that she had a few questions about. Overall, she is doing awesome in the class and seems to have a strong grasp of the material!"
"She and I worked on some of the concepts on her place value assessment that you emailed. She seems to have a good grasp of number sense at a beginning of the year second grade level and she seemed to be caught up in the understanding of things like the place value chart. We spent a large amount of time understanding the 120 chart and why we count the way we do for that specific strategy. She had difficulty understanding this at first, but we eventually got to a point where she was understanding. I will follow up with her next week on this specific concept to make sure that it is sticking with her before moving on. She did a great job and was a hard worker! Thanks for a great first session."
"She and I worked on systems of equations word problems. We then covered piecewise functions, including points of discontinuity. She asked questions as she worked through the material, when appropriate. We discussed some shortcuts like slope-intercept form for graphing linear functions. Overall, she had a positive attitude towards learning."
