Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Practiced timing of individual sections, specifically reading and science. The student gets most questions that he answers correct but skips a fairly high amount."
"This was the last session before the student took his ACT exam. We went over test taking skills and best practices. Then we reviewed our ACT grammar skills and did several sample reading sections."
"This student's a fantastically smart, grounded, and hard-working kid. She is looking forward to raising her ACT scores. Her best chances for picking up points, to me, are English and Math - she's behind on some basic concepts in both, despite her ability - though she's more preoccupied with Reading and Science. There's a lot to address, but it'll be fun - and pretty easy."
"Today we finished up with science practice and then went into some ACT English practice. We specifically covered science passages that involve two different viewpoints. The student also went through a 15-minute practice science section. One of the passages was very difficult for her. Some key takeaways are to slow down, try to understand the most important part of the passage, and picture difficult concepts in metaphors/language that make more sense for her. ACT Writing went well. We went through independent vs. dependent clauses, comparative vs. superlative errors, and proposition errors. She did well with these sections."
"Today we focused on ACT Reading and Math. For reading we discussed general test taking and practiced with reading tests. We will need to work on accuracy and then timing next time. For math the student just did some practice problems as a check to see where she was at. I gave her some formulas to look over for next time and let me know if has trouble understanding them."
"Today we focused on English and reading. As far as reading, analyzing and deciphering the tone of passages is certainly an area for improvement. I suggest taking more reading practice tests to familiarize the student with the material. I also suggest reading any scholarly articles to improve comprehension and vocab. For English, we made some improvement in her understanding of verb agreement and subject location, although this section could also use some extra attention. I highly suggest finding a list of prepositions and memorizing them in order to help you better find the subject of any sentence. Overall, today went very well."
