How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Educators and parents know that teaching children phonics is a process. The relationship between sounds and how words are spelled must be understood to properly decode words and sentences when reading. With this ability, your child may be able to sound out words as they read, and proficiency in this area is important for success in every other subject. An expert phonics tutor in Jacksonville, FL, may help your child work to stay ahead in their class. Depending on the areas of concern and where your student's greatest weaknesses lie, our directors may find an independent tutor who may work with their specific learning style.

For assistance in connecting with an experienced phonics tutor in Jacksonville, contact Varsity Tutors. Never before has finding an expert private tutor been so simple. The instructor may work with your child one-on-one, focusing specifically on their needs. After assessing your student's current skill level, the tutor may personalize each lesson and adapt the course along the way as your child progresses in phonics. They may implement common strategies, such as sound to word matching, odd word out, or phoneme deletion. The goal is to enable your student to recognize concepts such as consonant digraphs and vowel digraphs. Soon they may be able to sound out syllables and become adept at hearing and making rhymes.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Jacksonville, FL Phonics tutoring
Today the student worked on his homework. He had math pages, phonics, and spelling. He did a great job at answering all math questions. He worked quickly and remained focused throughout our session. He recognized the consonant blends and could read them and match them easily with the corresponding pictures. He was also able to spell all of his words and write the dictated sentences with ease. The only thing he needs to work on is remembering to start each sentence with a capital letter and placing an end punctuation at the end of each sentence. Great session.

The student reviewed his spelling list, took a test on it, and read a story. Then, he wrote down what happened in the beginning, middle, and end. He spelled 10 out of 12 words right, made corrections, and spelled the two that he missed right from memory after reading the story. He did a great job reading and recording what happened in each part. We spent the rest of the time building crosswords with letter tiles to practice spelling. On Monday, we will start with a new spelling list and continue practicing reading comprehension.

The student's homework assignment today was to write 5 proper nouns and tell if they are people, places, or things. He did that in pretty quick order and then we spent our time reading together and working on strategies to figure out words as well as checking for comprehension as we read.

We worked on the letter B, shapes, colors, and counting to 25. The student only skipped a couple numbers when counting to 25, which is very good. He knows his colors, but not his shapes. He struggled with writing lowercase b. We will continue to work on this skill. We spent more time today reading and singing songs which held his attention longer than writing.

I helped the student do some of his homework where he had to write his first name and last name. He did very well and his handwriting is very neat for his age. We also went over colors and how to spell the names. He was able to recognize all the color words I wrote out for him. We went above and beyond and I tried to have him spell out the color names. He did well with most of the colors but had a bit trouble with some. We also finished the book called "Dog's Colorful Day" where I asked him to recall all the things that happened earlier in the book in order to help develop his storytelling skills. I also had him read the words he would know. He knows many words and is able to sound out some words he may not remember. We also read his library book called "Wombat Divine" and we talked about what was happening in the story and I also let him read words that he would know. His mom was very excited to know that he was reading many words just in kindergarten.

For today, I worked with the student on sight words, reading, phonics, writing, and math. I think that he did really well. I had even found a stack of sight words we had been working on before the summer and went through them with him. He almost knew every one. We worked on the ones he didn't know. I also worked with him on math that he knows just to get him going, working on speed and figuring out the answer without using his fingers. He is able to work with tens nicely.
