Session Summaries by Middle School Math Tutors

Jacksonville, FL Middle School Math tutoring
Student 1 recently received a new textbook for studying data and statistics. We reviewed his homework together, practicing dot graphs and calculating minimum, maximum, range, and mode. Using that same data set, I then asked him to calculate the median and mean. I taught him about data that is skewed right or skewed left, and then he was able to correctly identify the skew of the data. Once his homework was finished, we turned to a new data set and analyzed it in the same way. He really enjoyed analyzing the data for trends. Student 2 is continuing to learn ways to solve quadratic equations. Today, she was practicing the quadratic formula. In addition to asking her to do practice problems for the quadratic formula, I asked her to identify one other method that might be useful for solving that equation. Through that exercise, we reviewed the process for completing the square. Next session, we will continue to review completing the square in addition to her other assignments.

We worked on math review practice. We reviewed decimals and percents with division and multiplication. He is still struggling with the concepts, and most of what he missed was during the setup, so we went over it again, this time just working on the setup. Once he was able to set them all up correctly, we played math drill games on the computer.

This was my first session with the student. I'm tutoring him in both math and ELA. For math, we went back to his most recent exam and reviewed it. He's at a pretty good place for most areas; he did badly on the exam due to a smattering of various small errors that proved disastrous, but are easily fixable I hope! For example, he missed some problems due to what I can only deduce was just accidental calculator typos! In another problem, he used the wrong formula, even though the proper formula was actually provided in the problem! So these problems can be fixed by just being more careful and going slower. He definitely has a mind that tries to race ahead to the end, which as I told him is okay for someone with more experience, but at his level he'll usually end up making a mistake. There were also some fundamental issues understanding some terminology and math vocab; as I explained to him, the specific words used in math problems are very important and have specific, technical meanings, so you have to be a lot more careful with words in math than in actual linguistic communication, where words are vague and contradictory. We also talked about his project due Friday; we worked through about 1/3 of it together, but I didn't want to spend too much time on it so I gave him some general tips and moved on. The one big area where he is needs help is fractions. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and converting to/from mixed numbers all give him trouble, so I spent a lot of time trying to remedy that. After that, I took a bit of time to look at his ELA. He didn't have much for me, but he did have a few journal entries. By inspecting them, I found that he's only having trouble with the material you'd expect from his age: sentence structure, their/there/they're, comma usage, etc. Nothing too major, and I'll definitely drill that in the future.

We went over math problems involving the topic of probability and statistics, since that will be the next topic the student will learn in school. He was very receptive, and by the end of the session, he was able to solve the problems correctly.
