How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

If you are interested in your child attending an independent or magnet school, they may likely need to take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). The ISEE consists of five distinct sections, including verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, math achievement, and an essay. Verbal reasoning involves synonyms and sentence completion. The quantitative reasoning section includes data analysis, numbers and operations, geometry, and measurement. Reading comprehension involves style, logic, organization, vocabulary, and a figurative section. Finally, the math achievement section includes whole numbers, fractions, algebraic concepts, geometry, data analysis, and probability.

The ISEE is broken down into three levels. The Upper Level exam is available to students who are entering into grades nine through twelve. Students who are entering into grades seven and eight may take the Middle Level exam. The Lower Level exam is available to those who are entering into grades five and six.

The student and I worked on Venn Diagrams and combinations today. I ended up giving him Middle level ISEE questions, and he understood them. I was very impressed. We reviewed some mathematical concepts that we hadn't touched on in a while, like ratios and averages. Then he read a passage about spiders and is describing something scary in his essay.

The student and I worked on a writing sample for the ISEE Lower Level test. We discussed ways to plan his writing, how to allot his 30 minutes for writing, and then he wrote. We then walked through his essay, looking for capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling. We also discussed another writing prompt he'd been given in school.

We have been focusing on math. The student did very well with long multiplication. Here and there, there were some errors, but it is becoming far more intuitive for her, I can tell! She is also getting equivalently faster with long division. Great job! Next, I went back to fractions. Today, I introduced what it means to add/subtract fractions, and how to do it. This is a complicated process, but I think she grasped it firmly. I also introduced multiplication and division of fractions, which she had very little issue with. I encouraged her to write out her work, because she does well when she knows what she is doing. I gave her homework for addition/subtraction/multiplication/division of fractions. Best of luck!

We reviewed a mixture of IESS math concepts. The student needed additional practice with factors, negative numbers, and recalling the different formulas for area. We created a flashcard noting the different formulas for him to practice. We will continue reviewing factors and negative numbers next week. We also began reviewing test taking strategies, and completed a short math drill. He spent less than 8 minutes working on 15 problems. He will need to work on slowing down a bit, and starting with problems that he easily knows to solve. His homework this week is to make flashcards for last week and this week's vocabulary words, and write a practice essay.
