How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

Several private and parochial high schools call for prospective students to pass the High School Placement Test, or HSPT. The HSPT may be a very important test for eighth-graders, as the results may be a deciding factor in whether a student gets accepted.

If you want your child to work towards success when taking the HSPT test, a private tutor may be a great help in preparing for this important exam. Varsity Tutors may assist students in connecting with a tutor in Jacksonville who could potentially help them understand the concepts of the HSPT. Not only may a personal HSPT tutor give your child an insight into how the test works, but the tutor may also boost their confidence going into the test day.

After going over the student's homework, the Reading Comprehension diagnostic (in which he did extremely well), we turned to the Mathematics section. Though Quantitative Skills was a breeze for him, the Math section, we found, was a bit more difficult, especially with regard to the time management. We took down some time-saving strategies and then turned to the Language section in the prep book. I assigned a practice section for homework after covering a few strategies.

The student is coming to the end of the group course she is taking in test preparation and will take her final test with them this coming weekend. We practiced what strategies to use to maximize her odds of scoring well even when she feels crunched for time. She did a practice math test and did very well on her cold score. There were a few concepts that she was unfamiliar with that will be discussed at a future session.

We started out by working through a language practice test, focused on capitalization, punctuation, and word usage. We also worked through a reading test, and she did a great job making inferences. We then went through flashcards for the math and quantitative sections, stopping to practice as needed. We ended by working through area problems for different shapes.

The student and I mainly practiced vocabulary, reading comprehension (along with 'main idea' and 'best phrasing' kinds of questions, etc.), and grammar questions today. We also spent a bit of time on analogies, which she aced. She has improved significantly on these question types over the past month. We used a series of COOP problems, and at less than half the allotted time, she was scoring in the high 70s-low 80s, when given a bite more than the allotted time for the COOP section, her scores jumped by about 10%. There are still some question types where she struggles, namely rephrasing sentences, but even here she has improved. Of the vocabulary we drilled, she retained about half of it from its introduction at the beginning of the lesson, to my quizzing her on it at the end, which was encouraging. She is making good progress on the language portion of the test overall, and has already come far.

Good session today. We started with percentage; the student did very well on this. He did need some help with setting up proportions to help figure out some answers. We then looked at the distance formula briefly. We finished by looking at word problems.
