How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

If you are interested in your child attending an independent or magnet school, they may likely need to take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). The ISEE has three levels. Students who are entering into grades five and six may take the Lower Level exam. Those entering into grades seven and eight are eligible to take the Middle Level exam. The Upper Level exam is given to students who are entering into grades nine through twelve. Each of the levels consists of five sections. The exams are similar, but the content becomes more difficult as the levels progress.

The five sections on the ISEE include math achievement, reading comprehension, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and an essay. The math achievement section may test your child on data analysis, algebraic concepts, fractions, decimals, and probability. The reading comprehension section includes figurative language, organization and logic, vocabulary, supporting ideas, and style. Quantitative reasoning involves numbers and operations, algebraic concepts, probability, measurement, and geometry. Finally, the verbal reasoning section includes sentence completion and synonyms. If you want to make sure that your child is prepared for the ISEE, your best bet is to connect them with a private ISEE tutor. ISEE Tutoring review by Jeremy in Memphis, TN
The student is doing so well! She should keep studying flashcards and doing practice test problems. She should also remember concepts we have talked about such as solving for x, reducing fractions, prime numbers, pie charts, Venn diagrams, and the associative property.

ISEE Tutoring review by Zachary in Memphis, TN
The student completed a reading section since our last meeting (20/25). We went over the questions he missed, focusing on inference and author's purpose questions. After some discussion of strategies, he was able to answer some similar practice questions correctly. Next, we reviewed the root words that we discussed last week. He did a good job recalling most of them, and we introduced some more examples for those he had trouble with. He also completed an essay since our last meeting. It was his strongest writing piece yet; he was able to give specific evidence and used excellent main ideas. We briefly went over a couple grammatical issues. We finished by reviewing some math concepts, including measures of central tendency, proportions, and sequences. He did very well with these, and he'll complete a practice math section for our next meeting.

ISEE Tutoring review by Alex in Memphis, TN
After reviewing last week's session, we started a vocabulary notebook and learned a system to acquire new vocabulary, which is based on research by Bob Marzano using the four square organizer. We continued to work on reading comprehension skills as I begin to write up the results of the assessment so his family knows what his strengths are and how they can help at home with any weaknesses. To begin proper coaching on the writing process, I had him begin an essay to see what strengths he already has in writing (and to of course, help him with any weaknesses I see). I was very impressed with his interest and focus in writing an essay on a past family vacation he enjoyed.

ISEE Tutoring review by Miriam in Memphis, TN
The student scored 16/25 in the practice test administered last session. We reviewed the questions he missed. He continues to struggle with word problems and setting up proportions. We reviewed all the vocabulary flashcards he has created. He has made great improvement in memorizing most of the words. He completed a verbal and quantitative practice test. We began reviewing the answers. His homework was to continue working on new vocabulary words, and review sections/ subjects we reviewed today.

ISEE Tutoring review by Meghan in Memphis, TN
The student and I met for the last time before the ISEE. He said that he was feeling ready, and we went through each section. We started with the verbal section. He's been doing well with these questions; he was able to figure out the correct answers even when he didn't know all the words. We then went into quantitative reasoning and then mathematical achievement. Our review included primes, finding the part or whole, percents, distributive property, and negative numbers. We also went through the area of a triangle, length of lines, lines of symmetry, midpoints, and how to use FOIL. We then went through strategies for the reading section. I also discussed how to approach the essay and overall strategy. He has been working hard since we started, and he has made a lot of progress.

ISEE Tutoring review by Jason in Memphis, TN
We worked on math, focused on unit conversion as well a section of practice test covering a variety of topics, and reading comprehension, with emphasis on speed reading. We timed most of the work to simulate the actual testing atmosphere. The student seems to be improving in her concentration.
