How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The ISEE, or Independent School Entrance Exam, is a three-level test that may be administered to your child from grades three through eleven. The exam spans five sections, with three hours to complete them. The sections are verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, math achievement, reading comprehension, and an essay. While the lower, middle, and upper levels of the test are similar in essence, the questions become more challenging at higher levels. Your child may have to take the ISEE if they are interested in attending a private school. To best prepare your child for their testing day, contact Varsity Tutors' educational directors to connect with ISEE tutors in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Brandon in Ann Arbor, MI
Midway through the session, I spoke with the student's mother, and we decided that we are going to shift the focus of our sessions exclusively to math. Today, we worked on a math practice test, where we focused on variables. We learned to find variables with a given equation, and then we also learned to make up values for variables to make it easier to find answers. We worked on manipulating variables and plugging in answers for the questions as variables. It was a tough session for him, but I think by the end, he began to understand the concept.

I had the student go through 2-3 short practice tests from each of the sections on the ISEE (verbal, quantitative, reading comprehension and mathematics). We looked at the questions he answered incorrectly and talked about why the answers were something different. The last thing we worked on was a brief free write utilizing a sample ISEE Lower Level essay prompt in preparation for a full-length essay he will write tomorrow. All of these were in preparation, in a sense, for the full-length practice test we are doing next session.

ISEE Tutoring review by Jason in Ann Arbor, MI
We worked mostly on the verbal section of the test: synonyms and sentence completions as well as the reading comprehension. The student has strong vocabulary as well RC abilities; I was quite impressed. We discussed the test strategy on how to deal with a word she doesn't know: elimination of unlikely answer choices, investigating each word root, especially resorting to French, which is her other language and could be very helpful figuring out the meaning of new vocabulary. I gave her an assignment of using a thesaurus for 20 new words and write down 5 synonyms for each. With math, we reviewed the fundamentals we covered in the last session: multiplication table and its speedy application, basic geometry, the line of symmetry, etc.

ISEE Tutoring review by Sarah Brooke in Ann Arbor, MI
Today the student and I nearly finished a math section together. I asked her dad to work with her on her mathematical foundational skills, and to have her finish the math section without any help! I need to see how well she does on her own, because sometimes she surprises me with some very quick math! I look forward to seeing her next week.

ISEE Tutoring review by Yamato in Ann Arbor, MI
We went through the first several sections for Arithmetic. It was mostly a review for the student, but we also went over new material such as variables and the distribution property. I asked him to walk me through every problem he did so that I could weed out unnecessary steps. I gave him homework for practicing the distribution property. He definitely seems to grasp math pretty well. I'm excited to see how he is with the English sections!
