Inglewood, CA SAT Writing and Language tutoring
Today the student and I continued practicing for the reading test. She did two timed passages, practicing the strategies we learned last week. Next, we reviewed system of equation questions. We talked through the SOE questions from her diagnostic test, and then she did a number of problems on her own. She is becoming much more comfortable with these types of questions.

Today the student and I continued working on the Math Calculator Active section of the SAT that we started last week. He did fine with answering questions correctly, but we still have to work on getting him to recognize what a question is asking and what tools he needs to solve it correctly. This is partly due to him not having some of the prerequisite knowledge needed to do well on this test. I was able to explain how to solve certain problems and he seemed to understand my explanations. We will continue to practice and practice and practice until he feels more comfortable.

Today the student and I covered the problems that he missed from both math sections on our first practice test. For tomorrow, he will complete both sections of another practice test so that we can review the missed problems from there. He seems to better understand the systems of equations, and mean, median, mode and range.

Today the student and I did an overview of the Essay Writing portion of the SAT, covering some of introductory material from the book, reading through the rubric for all three grading categories, and looking at a sample prompt and several sample essays. She is a fairly strong writer and used to writing under timed conditions, so we will definitely be focusing on getting her into the 4 scoring range in as many categories as possible. For the remainder of our session, we did some timed practice from the Reading section of Practice Test 1. Her accuracy was very good and she was well within the time limits. On reading, we will continue focusing on difficult question types and referring back to the passage to find evidence for all answers. Before we meet again, the student is going to try to write a practice essay from one of the prompts in the prep book for feedback.

Today the student and I discussed tactics for the reading section. We went over how to read a passage more carefully to figure out the meaning. We decided that for now, we will go slow and work with smaller chunks to practice reading comprehension. He brought up something I had said before, which is to read difficult books on his own to practice. I think this is a great idea, and will make the passages on the SAT much easier. He has a long list of books to look at and choose between. His homework is to find a book and start reading, and also to read pages 4-40 in his PSAT book.

Today the student and I finished grading her math SAT from our last session, and took a look at her most recent reading SAT. In math, we specifically reviewed radians and the complementary angle principle for sine and cosine. She gets almost all of the easy math questions right, so in the future we can focus on the hard math problems, specifically the more complex story problems. She is strong on the math once we've broken the problem down. Next, we went through and graded her reading and writing sections from the most recent SAT she did as homework. She would have gotten a 660, which is an improvement over her previous score. At our next session, I'd like to finish looking at the writing section of the SAT, and move on to the math.
