I covered vectors and sum of forces in x and y directions equaling 0. The student was first struggling a little bit with the sines and cosines of angles to find the x and y components. Today, we went over the student's homework covering amino acids and their properties. We looked at peptide bonds; the effect of pH on amino acids; amide formation and dehydration; and examining the differences of primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary amines. She was doing well with the material but needs to review the different amino acids to make sure she understands the different side chains and how they change with pH. Overall, she did a great job today!

The student and I covered the concepts of heat of reaction and formation as well as how these are applied to overall energy balances. We looked at degrees of freedom analyses, constructing hypothetical paths for state functions, and determining changes in enthalpy from changes in temperature while assuming ideal gas conditions. I would say the largest area of difficulty was with the concepts of heat of reaction and formation. These are relatively new concepts in the course, and it takes some time for their function, usage, and sign convention to become intuitive. She had a pretty good attitude toward the material, however, and definitely asked the right questions. She has a major homework assignment due, so that will be her practice for now. I did, however, make sure I was available for any extra help or clarification.
