Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we went over properties of equality, properties of congruency, statements vs. reasons, proofs, and logical reasoning. The student struggled a bit with determining the correct reason for a statement, but since this was his first time working with proofs, he did relatively well. After finishing the challenge problem, I helped him study for theology and also helped him work on his biology project."
"Today, the student and I worked on inductive and deductive reasoning, valid and invalid conclusions, the law of deduction, and the law of syllogism. She has a very good attitude. I discussed strategies for her to use on the geometry test she has tomorrow. Before the session, she was very unsure of the concepts. About halfway through the session, she began to see the light, and understood them quite well by the end of the session."
"Today, the student and I worked on triangles, translation, reflection, similar triangles, and how to bisect line and angle. She needed explanation on those subjects. She had great attitude toward the session. I showed her how to use pictures and models during this session."
"Today, the student began unit 3 of his class material. We went over transformations, reflectional and rotational symmetry and related problems. He has been doing well and continues to work diligently on his assignments. When working on his own, it's good to see that he is able to get passing grades on his assignments without help now. Slowly, but surely, he will reach his goal!"
"Today, the student seemed much more confident and said she was able to do almost all the problems on her worksheet. She had 2 problems which she couldn't figure out and both and to do with the Pythagorean theorem. We went over them so she would know how to do them for her test. We also went over how to use her graphing calculator and how to solve a few of the questions on her calculator. I showed her how to find the minimum and maximum values of a function as well as how to change the window settings. We wrote out instructions on how to use the graphing calculator so she wouldn't forget. We finished the session going over things to remember when taking the test. Overall, I feel like she understood the problems, there are a few gaps in her math knowledge that we will work on during our weekly sessions."
"Today, the student took his quiz on exponents. Next week, I will go over the concepts he struggled with on his assessment. Instead, today we focused on prepping him for the next subject in his class, scientific notation. I related the use of scientific notation to his current science class, and we discussed why it is useful. We also went over expanding the power of ten and what that means to the decimal place. We got through both positive and negative exponents, and he did well with picking up the concept quickly. Next week I will review scientific notation briefly with him to see if he has retained the information we went over."
