Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the information for the student's math quiz the next day by going over many practice problems. This primarily focused on different ways to multiply and estimate the answers. She understood the material and, because she had done so well on her homework, I think she is very prepared for this quiz. For the last ten minutes of the session we also worked on studying for her geography bee. She still has quite a bit to study for, like memorizing the locations of the states. We will continue working on this until the bee in December."
"In the beginning we reviewed standard and vertex forms of the quadratic equation. Then we practiced changing the standard form into the vertex form by completing the square. Next we reviewed complex numbers and solved several quadratic equations with complex roots. We learned how to take square root from the negative number. Next we were talking about polynomial functions, degree, and zeroes. After that we discussed the end behavior of odd and even polynomial functions and solved the application problems."
"We covered the basics of functions f(x) and the concept of ordered pairs (x,f(x)). It didn't take long for the student to understand that to list ordered pairs she simply needs to determine the corresponding function value for a given x by substituting the value into the equation that defines the function. Most of the time was spent on plotting linear functions given the slope intercept form y = mx+b by finding the y-intercept and x-intercept. I also helped her with finding the slope of a line through two given points, m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) with the two points being (x1,y1) and (x2,y2)."
"Today we covered related rates problems and optimization problems. The student seemed to struggle with turning the problem statements into equations the most. He seemed to have a positive attitude toward the material being reviewed. I left him the odd problems from those sections for extra practice."
"Today we reviewed the concepts that will be on the student's test tomorrow. Specifically we focused on the rules of log, graphing exponential equations, exponential growth and decay word problems, and compound interest. We worked on the review sheet that she was given, and then I also gave her a lot of practice problems. She had a thorough understanding of all of the concepts for the test."
"For algebra 2, we went over using the quadratic formula and completing the square to solve for the set of x-values. For chemistry, we briefly went over Lewis structures and how to draw them for diatomic molecules. The student missed a few details with the quadratic formula at first, but she was able to remember the negatives and square roots with more practice."
