Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Idaho, ID Calculus tutoring
In this session, we covered discrete probability distributions and how to create a table enumerating the probabilities associated with each realization of the discrete random variable. Then, using this table, we walked through the steps to construct the probability mass function and the cumulative density function. We worked through two examples. Next, we covered five counting rules as defined in her textbook. We focused especially on the distinction between Counting Rule 4 "Ordered Combinations" and Counting Rule 5 "Unordered Combinations." We also went over various examples of each to help identify whether a problem involved Ordered Combinations (license plates, lock on a combination, batting order) or Unordered Combinations (picking 3 fruits out of 5 for a salad, 5 person teams from class of 30, selecting 3 out of 7 pizza toppings). She was a wonderful student. She asked great questions.

In today's session we focused on multiplication of a multi digit number and a single digit number. The student has a test on this topic next week, so we did several practice problems as well as practiced test taking skills and showing all work. Strategies used in today's session included using place value to multiply large numbers. The student also worked through word problems requiring multiplication with an emphasis on using the correct units in her final answer. She worked hard for the duration of the session, and had a great attitude. Her mother and I also discussed her progress reports, and where she can improve her overall grade.

In today's session, he worked on some sight words, sentences and math. He was able to read most of his sight words and also the sentences. We are working on writing sentences, too. He is doing so much better in his math! I can tell that he is getting faster at solving the problems and doesn't have to use tally marks as much. We worked on double digits by one digit today so he could count up to find the answer. He did well with a little prompting on keep our numbers correct. We also wrote words describing a pumpkin using the words to spell pumpkin. He did a great job.

In today's session, the student and I worked on representing situations as a graph. We were given a few scenarios and we had to correctly interpret it in a distance v. time graph. He said he was confused on this topic while going over it in class, so we went over the exercises from class first. The story had to do with tracking distance from a person and a motion detector at various time intervals. We talked about how various movements will result in changes in the graph. After completing and reviewing his class worksheet, I made up a few examples to make sure he had a better handle on this material. We finished the session by working through a visual journal he had for his American studies class.

In today's session, the student completed her most recent math assignment on absolute value functions. We specifically focused on graphing absolute value functions and transformations of the parent function. We also looked at future material dealing with graphing inequalities which she picked up on very quickly. In looking at her most recent quiz, there are not any content deficiencies that I am concerned with. Most of her mistakes are sign errors and small calculation mistakes which are easily fixable. She really needs to pay close attention to detail and be extremely aware of each step as she solves problems. With more attentive practice she will be able to limit these mistakes in future quizzes and exams.
