Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed the calculations for a lab she had done in class. The lab focused on the heat of fusion of water. She had completed some calculations in class with her peers. We reviewed these calculations and then corrected them. We reviewed endothermic vs. exothermic reactions, but she was still confused about the + and - signs for her calculations. I explained that we know the signs for melting and cooling are going to be opposite so we just focus on the magnitude of the numbers when doing calculations. Then, we can add the signs. We also reviewed a few practice problems for her upcoming chemistry test. She is doing a pretty good job with these problems, but is struggling a bit with units and conversions. I showed her multiple ways to do the J to kJ conversion and derived where the J to calorie conversion comes from in an effort to show her how to work between the 2 units. She told me that she had a geometry test the next day and had some questions. I went through the majority of the practice test with her and solved a variety of problems in which she had to find the measures of angles in parallelograms and area of different polygons and triangles. I cleared up some confusion for her, and she was going to continue to practice before the test."
"During this session, we discussed molecular structures/VSEPR models and formal charge. We worked on a couple of problems in the textbook. Overall, this session went well."
"We went over mechanisms and reactions, including how to follow and do them. We also went through the student's notes up until the Gilman Reagent."
