Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent the whole session working on improving the student's reading comprehension abilities. We reviewed his main character list, and he did a nice job fleshing out his character descriptions with his own words. He has a much stronger grasp on the plot now. I encouraged him to ask as many questions as possible and to always look up a word if he does not know its definition. I also challenged him to use context clues and look up some of the words on his own. I asked him to provide quotes from chapters 12-14 which reflect the theme of each chapter. We concluded the session with an exercise in which I chose quotes from Chapter 12, which I think reflect the theme of the chapter and then followed up my quote selection with an explanation of how each quote connects to the theme. I've noticed that it helps the student if I provide multiple demonstrations and examples of the work I'd like him to complete in between our session meetings."
"We reviewed poetry and made note cards that helped understand concepts like rhythm and mood. The student worked on practice passages independently that tested skills on comprehending poems."
"For the next few sessions I decided to focus on sight words, specifically the student's fluency of sight words. We played sight word dominoes where she had to match up the sight words. She had difficulty identifying the following words: soon, came, went, where, why, use, was. I reintroduced the digraph /sh/. She decoded /sh/ words and then read a book which focused on words using /sh/. Toward the end of the session she wrote a two sentence statement with lots of details. After I reminded her to stretch her words and listen for the sounds, she asked to write more then I originally asked of her. She was very proud of her work, checking the spacing between her words, correct capitalization, and punctuation."
