Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the state practice test, doing the majority of the test. Simply put, the student was outstanding, answering 50 out of 57 questions correctly. He was confident, decisive, and clearly knew the material. He is in excellent position to pass the test. We will continue to review on our next session, just to keep him sharp, but right now, his progress has been superb."
"This was our final tutoring session. The student took the only available sample test. She sent in the reading comprehension portion to be graded. We went over the results."
"Before our session, the students did two practice math sections. We spent the session going through section 2 of practice test 1 in their books. Both students found this section to be difficult, yet they were also able to solve several of the problems without assistance. Some of the concepts that we reviewed were ratios, compound fractions, arithmetic mean, functions, cube roots, population growth, percentages, and geometry. The biggest difficulty that they were both facing was knowing how to start a problem. After we walked through the question together, they were often able to continue and solve the problem. This should improve as they continue to see real SAT problems. For next week, they will finish sections 2 and 4 from practice test 1 and take sections 2 and 5 from practice test 2. They will also read through page 239 in their books, which brings them to the end of the advanced arithmetic chapter. Next session we will continue going over the practice problems that they have worked through, and we will start reviewing the geometry section of the book."
"In this session, the student and I first went over the practice math and reading sections she completed for homework. She did well on both of these, but we reviewed some of the math questions she was unsure of, as well as the vocabulary that she didn't know. We then moved onto the writing section of the SAT. We talked about some strategies she can use to approach the various types of writing questions, and practiced by completing a section together. We also reviewed some of the most common corrections that show up on the SAT."
"This was my first in-person session with the student. It went very well! He is very eager to do well & seems very proficient in all of the subjects. We talked about the different sections of the test, general strategy & his goals in terms of scoring. I then had him do 2-3 passages from each section as practice to see where he lies academically. He has the potential to do very well on the ACT if he keeps up with practice & fine tunes some of his strategy."
"Session Notes: -Completed a writing multiple choice section -Reviewed the different types of questions -Discussed the need to differentiate between grammar problems and editing for concise/best responses -Completed critical reading section -Discussed vocabulary and Latin roots of words -Completed math multiple choice section -Discussed trigonometric tendencies, number orders and sequences, and algebraic pattern recognition Session Assignments: -Complete one writing essay section"
"The student wants to raise her math SAT - she is satisfied with her other section grades. So we spent the first session going over the different types of math SAT questions - factoring, remainder, average, and rates. I showed several new techniques which she caught onto quickly. She now knows how to pattern and weighted average questions."
"It went very well. We talked about the student's strengths and weaknesses on the ACT in general and went over many of his concerns. Did practice passages in the Science, English, and Math sections and talked about strategies in each. Assignment for the next week is to read a practice passage every day and do some practice tests if he can."
"The student and I studied SAT Math focusing on more algebra tonight. He did better than our previous session. We will continue to review Algebra concepts."
"We had our first session. For the first hour we worked on the English section. We completed a passage together and covered common questions and grammatical concepts seen on the test. We then worked on the Writing section. I showed her how to approach the essay and efficiently plan. We covered the questions she should be asking herself in order to take her writing to the next level, with strong supporting evidence. Writing was her lowest scoring subject, but she felt that discussing the section helped. With our few remaining minutes, we looked over a worksheet I provided her that gives all of the necessary Math concepts. We took a note of everything we need to review next session. I also provided her with a full practice test. Before we meet next, she should complete the Writing and English sections timed."
"We covered math sections of the SAT. Their math skills seem rusty, but they always have a good attitude. We discussed strategies for the math section of the test. Next week, we will be looking at a full-length practice test."
"The student and I mainly worked on mathematics today, doing practice problems out of the books she had. We also looked at which problems are best for simply plugging in the multiple choice answers. We are running out of problems from her prep books since she can't find her large book. The homework I gave her was to continue to work on her vocabulary flashcards and do at least one of the practice exams from the website. Her homework for me was to find more problems for us to work on, preferably physical, not online."
