"Her class had just started a new chapter on sound waves, Doppler effect, and the behavior of waves in open and closed pipes. We went over each of those topics in detail and did practice problems. She had an exam the previous week and she got a 49 out of 50 on the exam. The exam covered the previous chapter which was on general properties of waves, standing waves, and resonance."
"Today will be the last session in which the student and I cover a new topic. We finished up thermodynamics, then began a review for her final on Thursday. We started with a definition of heat and how it is different from temperature. We discussed specific heat and latent heat for phase changes. Problems involving these topics generally involve a system reaching thermal equilibrium. We also discussed how heat exchanges are related to energy. We then did quite a few practice problems from the textbook and from the website for her class. For the last hour of our session, she and I went back to Chapter 7, and we reviewed momentum and collisions. She has requested that we meet in the morning before her exam to do further review."
"Today, I helped the student with her physics homework. We were covering how to calculate position, velocity, and acceleration for problems with constant acceleration. We were reading graphs of position over time and velocity over time, then graphing position, velocity, and acceleration from what we read off of those graphs. In particular, we focused on calculating the slope of a line from a graph. She had some trouble reading the graphs, but by the end she was getting the hang of it."
"Today, I went over electric circuits and fields with the student. We did some practice problems and talked in detail about the concepts at play. She tends to focus on the less critical aspects of problem solving, and can benefit from practicing with circuit problems (specifically learning to redraw the circuits). She showed moderate interest in the material. Going forward, we will work through some more problems so she will become more comfortable with them. I have no doubt she'll do just fine in the class overall."
