Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Content Covered: The student and I covered factoring polynomial expressions, we reviewed several questions in the text, and reviewed how to break down word problems in anticipation of her exam the next day. Attitude: The student had an excellent attitude during our session, although was more anxious than usual towards the material. I attribute this to the coming exam. Strategies: We reviewed different ways of breaking down word problems such as using key words, implicit equations, and context. Concerns/Wins: The student has drastically improved her arithmetic since our first meeting. Her efforts in her homework have definitely shown progress!"
"During this session we worked on the "problem of the unit". This was a multistep problem that involved plotting points on a graph and determining the length between dots by breaking the shape into triangles and using the Pythagorean theorem. The student did quite well on this task. He has done much better with the geometric concepts than the algebraic concepts of the previous unit. However, he demonstrated a sub par understanding of rounding, so we had to review the rules for rounding as well."
"The student and I worked on simplifying radicals, roots, and exponential expressions. She was prepared and enthusiastic for our session. She had her notes and homework ready to upload to the platform; she got a B+ on the test she had last week. She said that was the highest grade she had gotten. We went over her homework which had lots of different types of problems, including a word problem. The student struggled a bit at first to apply principles of exponents and radicals but after some review was able the work well. She needs to be careful when simplifying problems that she makes sure her answer is in simplest form. I kept reminding her that when she's doing homework or on tests and quizzes that she should check each answer for anything else that can be simplified."
"The concept covered during this session was integration by parts. The student needed help a little in the beginning, but after I explained the material, she showed good understanding of it. I showed her different ways of solving this concept and she seemed very comfortable with them. All in all, it was a good session"
"The student and I reviewed trigonometric functions, exponential functions, and the definition of derivatives. We also started going into basic properties of finding derivatives. He was able to quickly understand any topics he may have been confused about. I will assign him extra practice problems later this week."
"Today, the student and I covered induction, the binomial theorem, Pascal's triangle, geometric series, and binomial distributions in probability. We started by working through a couple of induction examples. He had a good understanding of checking the initial case. I explained how to do the inductive step. Next we worked on expanding binomials using Pascal's triangle, which he understood quite well. We also worked with geometric series. I explained how to identify the ratio for a geometric series, and then we computed the sums of a couple of finite geometric series. Lastly, we did some examples with probability. We went over the binomial distribution and used it to calculate various probabilities. He definitely seemed to understand this as well."
