Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is excelling in her studies. She got a perfect score on both her reading and science homework. We also worked through some grammar and math. She is most worried about the essay, so we brainstormed two essays and are going to be working more in-depth on writing in the future."
"Today the student and I focused on the English and critical reading sections. We worked on punctuation and prepositions. He is doing a great job improving his English skills. I will work with him more on using evidence from the text to eliminate answers or to justify choosing the answer he believes is correct. I will email him resources regarding what we worked on today."
"The student and I talked about the English diagnostic test she had taken. She did not think it had gone as well as she had hoped, so we talked about what went well and what didn't. We also talked about specific questions she had about the material in the test. Next, we went through English topics section by section and did practice questions. We covered: appositive and interrupting phrase errors, conjunction errors, modifier errors, and other sentence errors. I introduced and explained each topic, and then she worked through questions out loud using our strategies, such as process of elimination and rephrasing. Next time, we plan to continue working on the English section topics. I also assigned another diagnostic test for her to take before our next meeting to monitor her progress."
"We went over the math section of an ACT practice test. We reviewed trigonometry and geometry concepts and looked at ways to solve problems. We talked a lot about visualizing problems or wording them in ways that are more accessible or understandable -- converting from "math-speak" to "plain-speak." We also looked at solving problems by working from the top down -- identifying the last step needed to get the answer and working backward. Next session we will go over the English and science sections."
"We worked on the Reading section today. The student also responded very well to the methods I taught her here. This was great to see as her confidence was running a little low after working on the Math for so long. Great scores (30 range for timed passages). We also reviewed her Science homework, which she also performed well on."
"The student and I spent the first half of the session working on some key math concepts for the ACT mainly trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent), and then we spent the second half practicing ACT English. He made a lot of progress on the English section just in the small amount of time we were practicing going from getting 7 questions wrong on a passage to only getting 2 wrong. I'm excited to see him continue to progress as we move forward. For next week, I gave him an assignment which should only take a couple of hours to read and complete three ACT reading passages off a diagnostic test online. He will need to time himself to see how long it takes and then spend a half hour each on math and English practice questions. We will start with the science section next week."
"Worked with the student on the ACT. Went over Graphing and Coordinate Geometry, techniques for reading, and opposing scientists passages. Also introduced the writing portion. She will complete it for homework."
"We started off our session going over the ACT reading passages that I had asked the student to work on and complete. Considering these were harder, she did pretty well with them and also finished them in the time allotted. After, we went over the outline that she prepared for a writing prompt. We went over tips and strategies in tackling these prompts, and I believe she felt confident about this portion. We then went over a math review sheet that I had printed out for her by making sure she knew everything on it and highlighting certain math concepts that we would need to go over for our next session. When we meet again, I have asked her to complete another outline for a writing prompt, to do a whole reading section in 45 min, and a whole math section. I also plan on working on the English and science sections for that session as well and hope to start doing whole practice ACT tests the following week."
"We devoted all of today's session to the English section. We took the time to identify parts of speech in sentences that asked questions about grammar. We also looked at all potential responses to have a better understanding of what sentence errors are created with incorrect answers. Our work was slow but I think very helpful. I plan to do a bit more of it this next weekend."
"Student and I went over the science practice he did. He got 30/40 correct. He understands problems with graphs and charts, and we are working on improving the questions that are based on reading passages. We then did some math problems, focused on solving algebraically. Next week, we will do half a reading and half a math passage."
"We had a great first session! We began by reviewing the student's past ACT scores to identify areas of focus. Due to student's desired score, we decided that we would work on all areas of the exam. Today we started with reading. I presented her with a lot of information and she did very well with it. I look forward to seeing her improve!"
"The student scored excellently on his algebra assessment; I will give another post-test to ensure retention of the knowledge and strategies he learned. Science will be our focus for the next session. His homework is practice on two different parts of the reading section."
