Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's teacher gave the class a worksheet to complete. The content was centered around solving quadratic equations. There are three basic methods available for accomplishing this. I had him use two of the three methods on each problems. If both methods yielded the same answers then he knew he did the problem right. However, if the answers did not agree, he would have to use the work he did with one method to figure out how to solve the other."
"We went over graphing quadratic equations. While doing this, we also reviewed factoring, identifying the greatest common factor, and adding/subtracting positive and negative integers."
"Reviewed absolute value equations, differences between absolute value and quadratic graphs. Also began reviewing new French vocabulary (words around the house)."
"The student and I reviewed two homework assignments today on square root equations. He struggled a tiny bit with the concept of imaginary numbers, but got more comfortable with practice. We will begin the next session with a review of those problems."
"In our session today, the student and I started by going over a quiz he took last Friday. For the most part he did well and understood the material, but there were a couple of questions he was unsure of. These involved locating and measuring reference angles and finding positive and negative coterminal angles. We discussed both problems, clarifying how to solve them, and he felt far more confident after we went over them. Additionally, we reviewed his current homework assignment on the law of sines and solving triangles. This involved extensive application of the law of sines with pre-drawn triangles as well as triangles we had to interpret from word problems. The student was very comfortable using the law and solving for the missing parts of triangles after a couple of practice problems."
"Today we worked on practicing factoring problems. We covered the difference in strategies for factoring quadratic equations were a = 1 versus a >1. We spent the rest of the session practicing these strategies. The student is picking up many of the patterns quickly and now needs to practice repeatedly to master them. He will get another set of problems that focus on using the strategies we covered today."
