Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered the parts of the test that the student needed help most with, such as perpendicular slopes, colons, and the two scientists passages. After she felt more comfortable with those, we drilled more English tests."
"The student and I had a good last session. I had him go through a full, timed English section to check for any grammar issues. His grammar has definitely improved in the past few weeks. We finished by walking through his essay strategies and talking about his approach to the test on Saturday. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does on Saturday!"
"Today we went over math problems in the third practice exam from the ACT prep guide. These covered a variety of topics and the student answered most of the questions correctly although sometimes she needed some help. I asked her to work through one of the practice tests before we meet again so we can determine which kinds of problems she has the most difficulty with and focus on those."
"The student and I did an overall review of the concepts on the test and pacing. We worked on a lot of math problems. We also did some science and English. We decided to forgo doing reading due to the short time frame. I could see improvement in confidence on the math problems and common types of problems."
"I had the student practice timed passages for each section to get him in the zone for the test. He did very well, getting almost all of the questions right each time. Based on his performance, I believe he's very ready for the test. At the end I gave him a few quick tips to remember on test day."
"The student and I reviewed her most recent practice test. She scored a 25 on the English, which is what she would like to get as a total score on the test. We discussed sentence boundaries and redundancy in that section primarily. In math, we reviewed logarithms, functions, and graphing equations. We then discussed test strategies for the science and reading sections."
"The student and I had our final session before she took her ACT this morning. We did a bit of practice over each section, reminding her of the important tools and techniques we had developed over our time. She has displayed a lot of improvement and I am very confident in her abilities. Her pacing has gotten so much better and I am sure she will be able to do much better this time around."
"For this session, we looked mostly at Science: Conflicting Viewpoints. We discussed how to find the pieces that the 2 different views agreed and disagreed on. The student then completed a few individual passages and we went through the answers and discussed specific word choice, using the introduction, using the vocabulary, and knowing which opinion to look at. She then took half a science section and we went through the answers afterwards. At the end, we went through some math since that was what she was the most concerned about. We went through questions she got stuck on as well as made an equation sheet of what she should know."
"As this was our last session before the student took the test, we reviewed her strategies (especially time management) for each section. We also reviewed the math formulas and drilled about 30 math questions. She did well with these and she says she feels comfortable skipping ones that will take her a long time to do and returning to them if she has time. We also went over science passages, emphasizing marking up the passages and mapping for the conflicting viewpoints passage. She said that she feels more prepared for this test and thinks she'll do well!"
"Today we discussed misplaced modifiers, punctuation, and rhetoric for the English test. We also worked on math, reviewing rates, slopes, and longer word problems. I left extra English practice."
"Today we covered root words (Latin and Greek) and affixes (prefixes and suffixes) in order to help the student with context clues and vocabulary. We also reviewed some math problems and walked through certain math equations. There were no concerns for this session."
"Focused on the Science section of the ACT, reviewing general test taking practices and how to approach the various questions on the test, in addition to general knowledge for this section. In general, the student needs to review some basic scientific concepts and read/look more closely at the information and graphs. He should continue to study/practice each day."
