Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we read an excerpt which he will be tested on in his upcoming compare and contrast exam. We took extensive notes. We then moved onto economics, reviewing a few chapters for a test he will have later this week. He told me he did well on his last economics test."
"We covered setting a topic to write about for the student's persuasive piece, gathering information for it, researching it, and organizing how she is going to logically piece her argument together. She wanted some help with a thesis for her topic, so we gathered more information and figured out what the main point of her essay should say. She is going to put all her sources, examples, and quotes in a word document and then organize each quote by sub-topic for next time."
"On Tuesday, we worked on her essay for English, which is a narrative prequel to a short story they read, and an analysis of it. We went through and finished the analysis and cleaned up the story. We also worked on her Multi Media class. The hybrid format is just not beneficial, since the teacher gives very complex assignments. We were working on coming up with a prompt for their third essay, which is a group project."
"This time we went over 2 idiom worksheets which were very easy for both students! We then talked about prepositions and prepositional phrases, which were also easy, and I left them with a preposition worksheet and a packet of subject-verb agreement practice. We did a timed email-writing practice and went over active and passive voice. We also talked about how they sometimes encounter difficulty with different forms of the verb "to be" ("should have had"), so I suggested that they read the verbs section of the Writer's handbook for next time, and I will plan to bring some exercises and practice for them on this subject next time."
"The student and I had a lot of fun reviewing and analyzing some of Emily Dickinson's poems for her English class. We also read portions of the feminist text Vindication of the Rights of Women. We discussed feminism in Dickinson's poems and the way it relates to feminism in the nineteenth century in general."
"We reviewed the student's research paper packet and expectations. We researched and discussed the book he chose for his research paper, "Of Mice and Men." We then worked on his paragraph summary of why he chose the book for his research paper. We then researched censorship, book banning, and the reasons why "Of Mice and Men" has been challenged and banned in schools across the country. Finally, we bookmarked a few websites that will be useful when he begins to research for his paper. Assignment left for next session is to buy and begin reading the book and taking notes."
