"We did the student's homework. It was an activity of unscrambling the letters in the months. We went over the sight words and added some new ones. She is almost through the first 100. We read more of the book "Danny the Dinosaur." We practiced reading words with long vowel sounds."
"This was my final session with the student. He and I had been working on reading "Band of Brothers." We focused on making sure he kept his comprehension up, his note-taking abilities, and practicing his reading skills. He had developed a "character" for a game we played based on the characteristics found by the majority of members of Easy Company, the focus of Band of Brothers. I also created a character, and we identified, based on the notes he had taken in the previous session, which person had developed a character most resembling Easy Company. Notes had indicated that he learns well with strategy games, so I tried this approach. He seemed to enjoy it. It was my intention to work 1/3 of the time on books he was interested in, 1/3 on magazines, and 1/3 on more technical materials so he could try a variety of reading and writing experiences."
"The student told me that his reading intervention instructor at school commented that he is reading much better and recognizing many new words and phonics sounds. I think there is more information she wants to give me, and the student will pass my email address along to the teacher. He read quite a bit in his chapter book, and I am seeing a marked improvement in the quality of his sounds and word recognition. He is downright fast at times and can go many words at a time without having to slow down and concentrate. When he does slow down, he knows how to take his time and sound out words, and we talk about meaning within context of the sentence. He really likes doing his word/phonics cards. I am working on a few new games for when we restart our sessions in June. He wrote many words today (I'm giving him a quick break from full sentences). We are not meeting again until the first week in June. The last time we took a break of a couple of weeks, there was a marked improvement in his reading. I think the break will do him good, and I expect to take things up another notch over the summer."
