Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The new material primarily covered oxidation of alkenes, thus making this session the third to cover reactions with alkenes. We went over the relative effectiveness of certain compounds as oxidizers, namely ozone, KMnO4, and OsO4. The mechanism for each different oxidation reaction was explored and explicated. There were also a few reactions involving the creation of cyclopropanes using carbenes and the hydrogenation of alkenes using hydrogen gas and a catalyst (such as Ni, Pd, or Pt). Again, the mechanisms for each of these reactions was investigated as well. To finish the session, the student and I alternated in creating a table that listed all of the different reactions involving alkenes. There were four columns: reagents, product structure, product category, and addition differentiation (syn/anti and Markovnikov/anti-Markovnikov). All in all, she successfully thought through 14 reactions with alkenes with little to no help from me. I encouraged her to use the table as a study guide and edit it if she finds more reactions that we missed before she takes her quiz tomorrow."
"We covered renal physiology. The student is studying a lot on her own time and is doing well overall."
"• We started to go through the practice exam that she did. We then went through and finished kinematics. • I told her to complete the end of the chapter review questions."
