# Coefficient

A coefficient is a number which multiplies a variable, or a product of variables.

In a polynomial, each term has a coefficient.

Example:

$3{x}^{2}-5xy+{y}^{2}+0.2x+39$

Here, the coefficient of the ${x}^{2}$ term is $3$ .

The coefficient of the $xy$ term is $-5$ .

The coefficient of the ${y}^{2}$ term is $1$ (note that the number 1 need not be written).

The coefficient of the $x$ term is $0.2$ .

The coefficient of the $y$ term is $0$ (since the $y$ term doesn't show up at all).
