Tutoring review by Jessica in Hoquiam, WA
I started off the session with the student doing a 5 minute multiplication drill worksheet. We then worked on understanding place value and how to round to the nearest of a place value. I can tell she is making progress with these. We looked at this concept by drawing number lines, which helped. We will need to review these again in our next session. We then did a review of our last session (dividing decimals) and she remembered how to do it really well. She did a division drill worksheet, and then finally did a challenge problem worksheet combining division and rounding. I was really impressed with her ability to focus on the tutoring session even after a long day of testing at school. She maintained a good attitude! I'm going to leave her with an online multiplication drill game to practice for 5 minutes every day. By doing this, she will get faster at multiplication, and thus be able to work faster on a variety of problems.

Tutoring review by Bill in Hoquiam, WA
The student and I covered topics from his test including but not limited to solving a system of equations when given the two equations, solving a system of equations by using the substitution method, finding the correct solution set to a system of inequalities when given the graph, translating matrices, and exponents. The student was very cooperative throughout the session. He was able to translate a system of equations into the matrix and select the correct answer independently. He is still struggling with algebraic operations, conceptually understanding graphs of equations and inequalities, and basic properties of exponents and needs assistance in solving these problems.

The student needed to prepare for a test the following day. We reviewed simple kinematics problems. The student struggled a bit with visualizing the setup of the problems. Once we worked to address this issue, she was able to better understand how to solve the problems. The student voiced at the end of the session that she felt better prepared for her test the next day.

In this session both students practiced interviewing role plays for their upcoming school admission process. I acted as the school staff member and they responded to a series of questions that are part of the written application. Both were nervous at first and then settled into being themselves and answering from their hearts. It was a fun learning experience. In the remainder of the session, they returned to writing a five page essay for the ISEE they are taking in January. Overall, they did very well.

The student and I worked on prepositions, synonyms and antonyms. We talked about some communication challenges she is overcoming and looked at new ways in which she might be able to work on her conversational English skills. She asked about words she didn't understand in the exercises we worked through and then discussed the meaning and proper usage.

Today the student worked through his musical bibliography. He had about half of the assignment done, so he continued until he was able to finish almost the entire thing. Together we researched and discussed the meanings behind the songs and how we could interpret them. Then I edited his writing for the explanations behind the songs. This will hopefully allow him to bring his grade up in literature. He is working on his history outline. Then we will prepare for his final exams next week.
