Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"At the beginning of the session I checked the student's Spanish homework. He had made a few simple mistakes, but he had filled out each page appropriately. I then began a discussion on basic concepts of electricity and energy generation since this is of some interest to the student. I took notes from a site on energy and electricity which I condensed into a lesson plan. The student then took notes on my discussion."
"Today we started by listening to the Cells video and we made sure the student's notes were complete. She completed two activities - one was labeling parts of the cell and the other was typing the function of a list of organelles. She took the test and scored 100%! She took a lot more time to read each question and thought through each response. I was very pleased with her critical thinking process. We then started a new video on Cell Organelles, and since I had brought her a form with all the organelles and she had filled it in from a prior session, we basically used the video to confirm that her descriptions were complete and thorough. Once again she completed two labeling activities and took the quiz - another 100%. I pointed out to her that she now had been exposed to the same material 4 times and her command of the material had improved tremendously. We discussed my plan to create her own science text and that she would use her notes to study from it. She seemed pleased, maybe relieved. I told her we were working on learning how to take notes, so her learning was focused on main idea and key details not every single page in a textbook."
"We went over the study strategies for this test and attempted to rethink the portions of our design that did not work. The student did receive a B on the first test so that was an excellent sign, but there is still room for improvement."
"We spent the entire session working on adding detail to her writing. She worked hard on not only finding detail from the text to support her answer, but also paraphrasing the text afterwards while connecting the text back to her original claim. Her biggest struggle today dealt with connecting the text to her claim. She needs to continue to work on proving to the reader why she picked the text example that she did. She was left with a magazine article. She must take a side in the debate and defend her claims with textual evidence."
"Today we worked on the student's Economics. I am impressed by how well he understands the material conceptually."
"The student did his math homework on vertical asymptotes. I also helped him prep for an economics test on chapter 9 coming up this Thursday."
