Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

Homer Glen, IL English Grammar and Syntax tutoring
The student and I started our session with working on his homework. I helped him finish a word find puzzle and clean up another homework sheet. From there we continued our work with reading comprehension. The student continues to improve, guessing at fewer and fewer words. Then we did some more math. Again, the student is showing vast improvement in two-digit math problems and continues to be able to do these sorts of addition and subtraction problems faster and more accurately than before. We then worked on the computer. We are continuing our work with two programs, both of which seem to be helping him with his math skills and phonics skills respectively.

The student and I started with reading and I had her continue asking questions before, during, and after reading. She was doing really well with thinking of questions today. Then I timed her reading the common phrases found in text, for 1 minute. During the 1st read she read 31 phrases and the second time, read 34 phrases. After reading, I had her work on identifying prime numbers. She had to look at a table and decide if the number was prime or composite, if it was prime she could color it in. After she had identified and colored all the prime numbers there was a hidden picture. We also discussed how 0 and 1 were not prime numbers. We worked on a few practice from her math book, and also looked at the upcoming topics to see when she would start learning new things.

The student and I talked a little about the second Gary Soto story that I assigned to him. There were not so many figures of speech to highlight, but he was able to talk to me about the plot, how the tension rose, climaxed, and fell. Next, we did a series of exercises on thinking and writing with vivid sensory detail. In a little "game," I first described a place in as much detail as possible, and asked him to guess. Then, we switched roles, and I pushed him to use as many sound/sight/smell/taste/touch details as possible to illustrate a place that I could guess. Next, I asked him to spend an extended amount of time brainstorming the images of a golf course. He was able to generate a whole page of details! After that, I told him to come up with an "idea web" that would connect his thoughts on "Why I Play Golf." As his assignment, he will write an essay using both the page of details and the idea web. We will discuss on Tuesday.
