"Today I explained gravity in more detail (as a projectile problem resulting in an orbit, and as a negative potential well). We went over a problem on momentum and orbits. I also provided a crash course on important concepts in calculus in preparation for learning simple harmonic motion. The student is still in pre-calculus and won't have as much background so I demonstrated how the power rule relates to area, applying derivatives/integrals to physics, and calculus with sine and cosine. An understanding of these concepts in advance will help a lot."
"The student's class is already moving ahead to nuclear and atomic physics, so we combined this with the discussion we've been having on energy for the last two weeks. We covered the different types of nuclear emissions (alpha, beta, gamma) and did some practice with counting the number of protons, neutrons and mass number. I gave him practice exercises to tell me, by looking at a graph of the belt of stability, what type of emission we should get and to write the nuclear equation out. We noted that the charge on the left side of the equation has to equal that of what is on the right side. While we were discussing radioactive decay, we talked about half life, what it is measuring specifically, as well as did some practice problems with this from the end of his chapter. For most of our session, we discussed the details that are involved in radioactive decay and how to recognize the type of emission given off. We also discussed the particles in detail, discussing positrons, antineutrinos & neutrinos, alpha, beta, and gamma particles. Next week we will continue our discussion and apply this to new information that he will need to know."
"In this session we focused on Kirchhoff's law and Ohm's law with parallel and circuits series. We focused a lot of time doing practice problems, and the student was given more problems to work with until our next session. The student finally understood the steps to solve the problems after much practice."
"We worked through some vocabulary, as well as Mendelian genetics. The student needs to find a time when she can buckle down for an hour at a time, and simply work through her worksheets one step at a time."
"There were lots of topics in today's session. We worked on things like nomenclature, E and Z conformations, acid-base reactions, intro to reactions and how to draw them, as well as a quick bout with Newman projections. She is doing fantastic thus far and I'm glad we got to start at the beginning together because she is going to ace the class."
