The student and I went over part of the vocabulary from last week which was the first part of a video in Spanish on words used to describe people. Then, we watched the second chunk of the video. We learned many new words and concentrated on how to conjugate verbs. He is getting many new verbs and how to conjugate them in the present. Today we also added the past participle of the verb. He had to do several translations of sentences and did a good job.

Today, the student had some homework assignments about -ar verbs that he wanted me to look over. He got most of the questions right but had a few questions. He also got a 100% on the quiz I helped him study for last week! He is a very bright, intelligent, hard working student and it is always a pleasure helping him reach his highest potential. After quizzing him on a new set of vocabulary words, he said he wanted me to quiz him to help him study for a chemistry quiz about matching the first 30 elements of the periodic table to their atomic symbols coming up for him next week. We went over the list twice, and he didn't get a single element incorrect! I look forward to working with him in future sessions to come.

During the first half hour, I had the students continue practicing their sentences in Spanish. To my surprise, student 1 has already begun to generate sentences on his own. Student 2 is showing great progress as well, but she wants to speak only when she can do so perfectly. I assured her that everybody makes mistakes, even in English, and that she shouldn't be afraid to learn a new language. By the time we got to the card game, they were happy to play, and demonstrated acquisition of new vocabulary. Overall, the session went excellently, and we will continue next week.

The student and I spent the session reading a newspaper article about the new dictionary launched by a Spanish language teaching company. The session was great because it gave her an opportunity to read out loud and find her pronunciation opportunities. The article touched on new words added to the Spanish language, so the learning from that side was good also. We spent time with each paragraph, making sure we understood each word and the meaning of the sentences.

In this first session, the student brought me up to speed with where he was with the language. We revisited the preterite tense and looked at some of its irregular verbs. He is very comfortable with the basic preterite. No concerns.

Today we covered the following topics: Greetings, the verb etre (to be), adjectives of nationality, profession, and appearance, and masculine/feminine agreement, and we got started with how to ask questions and how to use negation. For about the first 30 minutes, we did some roleplays to practice greetings in different situations, and for the rest of the time, we played a 20-questions style game to practice descriptions of people. The student picked up vocabulary and pronunciation really quickly. His most common mistake was forgetting to include the verb as sentences became more complex, which is a really common problem I've seen before. As he practices and gets more comfortable, that will become more automatic. I left him with the list of vocabulary we used throughout the lesson, so he can review that before we meet again next week. He has a great attitude towards learning French. He's enthusiastic and enjoys challenging himself.
