"During today's session, the student and I extended our lesson on solving quadratic equations. Our main focus was applications (word problems) of quadratics. I introduced how to solve area/perimeter of rectangle quadratics. I will provide her with some additional practice problems on this topic via email. I also introduced how to use quadratic equations to solve consecutive integer word problems, including consecutive positive multiples and consecutive even and odd integers. She was able to grasp the concepts. As always, she asked questions for clarification and was able to explain the process and why after a few attempts. We will continue to review quadratics and the quadratic formula during the next session. Also, I will review solving systems of equations and introduce matrices."
"He has a program via CD that he's learning Algebra 1 from and he completed a few of the lessons prior to this meeting. We completed 3 lessons today and on all of the evaluations he got above 90%. There were a few problems we worked through on paper but since the lesson is digital input, he doesn't seem to have as much practice doing it on paper. I told him how I'd like it if he had troubles with anything before the next session, writing down which lesson number it is and what the question is as well as what he did to try and work through it in case there are any consistent issues. I can't very well decipher and help if it's all being done in his head or in a calculator. He was a bit tired from hockey practice so there were a couple of stumbles, but hopefully writing down problems instead of trying to calculate everything in his head will help him out more, even when tired."
"He has a test coming up on Thursday, covering all of chapter one of his text. He was struggling specifically with mixture problems and literal equations. We reviewed the general problem solving model. We looked at his study guide and practiced the deficit skills, as well as a brief review of ratios and proportions, percentage change and absolute value. I left him with some additional practice problems covering mixtures and literal equations."
"He is still covering composite functions in class, which we have done extensive practice with together. So we spent our time today working on some standardized test practice, covering solving linear, quadratic and equations involving square roots, absolute value equations, and inequalities. He did well with most of this but struggled with factoring quadratic equations, as well as with solving equations with square roots in them. So, we spent the remainder of our time going through problems involving factoring quadratic equations. By the end of today, he was doing much better with the factoring and should be able to pick it up much quicker next time it comes up."
"He is still understanding his math assignments very well. We worked with solving inequalities, using one and two variables. He is still having a hard time when there is more than 2 variables, so we practiced those problems. We completed four homework assignments together, and he felt comfortable doing the problems without my help. Afterwards, we reviewed some of the tougher problems until he felt comfortable with those, as well. We made good use of our time today, and he worked very hard. "
"He took his first test yesterday and was feeling very confident about how he did. This is a huge improvement from his severe lack of confidence in math when I first started working with him. He had a couple of problems that he wanted to check over with me that he remembered from yesterday, and it looked like they were both correct. We moved onto his assignment for chapter 5. His class is starting to look at rational functions and how to work with them in different ways. The first portion covered how to simplify rational expressions, and he had few problems figuring things out. When we started working with multiplying and dividing rational expressions, things slowed down a bit. He was able to complete most of the problems with little help after I gave him a short instruction. He did very well applying his knowledge from the previous section to work on his current problems."
